Challenges

Challenges are a great way to keep track of one's personal growth when exploring a hobby. They let you see what you achieved in a given year and, when taken part of amid a vibrant community, can be a fun and engaging social experience as well. Here are the gaming related challenges that I would like to complete in 2019.

While five by five or ten by ten challenges seem to be more popular, as a new collector I like the fact that this challenge will allow me to grow my collection and learn more about what I like in board and card games, while still keeping in mind that I should be paying attention to how many games I am adding to my collection and whether they are proving to be good investments--in other words, are they getting played?

Mechanics are the nuts and bolts, or the engine, that a game runs on and that makes it able to be played. Learning what types of mechanics you like can help you determine whether new games will work for you or, just as important, what new concepts you may need to learn when you buy something. Since I am just getting started in gaming, there are a lot of mechanic types that I am not totally familiar with. While I'm sure I'll be checking off some games that have core ideas that I'm already comfortable with, I also want to expand what I play so I can enjoy a wide variety of games.

I am participating at Normal Difficulty, which means I need to play at least 15 different mechanics.

While mechanics determine how a game plays, categories determine the mood and feel of how a game looks and who it might appeal to on an aesthetic level. While there are certainly types of games I am more likely to gravitate toward--cutesy characters, fantasy, and zombies all come to mind--my focus here (as with the mechanics challenge) is to make sure I don't wind up with a collection of games that are, essentially, clones of one another.

I will be doing the challenge on normal difficulty, which means I need to play 20 different categories.

I might be a brand new board and card gamer, but that doesn't mean I can or should be thinking like a zombie when I decide which games to add to my collection. I'm not as worried about how much I spend on my first year of gaming as I am about how much my family and I use the games that I buy. Making sure that I balance my purchases based on who ends up getting involved in our game nights or what I want to play solo, and making sure the stuff that I buy actually hits the table enough to pay for itself are my primary concerns.

I love Elder Sign. I have it on my tablet, on my PC and I intend to buy the game in its actual game form--along with all of its expansions (eventually!). With that in mind, the only game specific challenge that I am taking on this year is the Elder Sign Challenge, which is to defeat 8 different Ancient Ones before 16 investigators can be devoured. Sounds 'easy' right? Well, if the board game is as intense as the PC version, that might not be quite the case. Will any of my people survive? I'll be keeping this one updated, so keep an eye out for updates!

The goal of this challenge is to successfully complete 5 other year long challenges on BoardGameGeek. I figure that if I'm going to do a variety of challenges anyway, I may as well give this a shot as my long term goal. Will I succeed? By the end of the year we will all find out. :)
